What is the Order of the Eastern Star?

The Order of the Eastern Star is a fraternal organization for women over the age of 18 and men who are members of the Masonic fraternity. We are united by the desire to help others and to be part of a greater family. We are the largest fraternal organization in the world to which both men and women may belong with approximately one million members worldwide.

We strive to live our lives by the beliefs of Charity, Truth and Loving Kindness along with certain core values.

Friendship

We are the largest fraternal organization in the world to which both women and men can belong. With Chapters in almost all 50 states and in 27 countries around the world, members can go anywhere and know that they can find friends and a helpful hand when they're in need.

Charity

As an organization, we raise funds for aid to our members in need, scholarships for students regardless of age or membership status, as well as other charities that benefit all human-kind.

Is the Order of the Eastern Star a religion?

No. Our members are united in the belief in a Supreme Being but they practice many different faiths. We do not deny an individual's choice of religion, we embrace it and share it, without attempting to change anyone's belief.

Diversity

The members of our Order reflect the social, cultural, educational, ethnic and religious diversity of the community around them. We value each other's strengths and opinions.

Membership

In New York State, membership is open to women 18 years of age and older, as well as Master masons in good standing with their Lodges.

We are looking for candidates for membership who are interested in helping others by extending a loving hand through charitable work, who believe in the existence of a Supreme Being, who enjoy socializing among people of all ages and walks of life and who demonstrate they are of good character.

What is the purpose of the OES?

The state purposes of the organization are charitable, educational. fraternal and scientific but there is much more to Eastern Star than that. Our ritual provides guideline of the Order and inspires us using beautiful and moving stories illustrating heroic conduct and moral values. Eastern Star strives to take good people and through uplifting and elevating associations of love and service, and through teaching and example, build an Order which is Truth dedicated to Charity, Truth and Loving Kindness. Simply put, we want to make our world a better place.
